Tjokroaminoto is the second of 12 children, his father is R.M. Tjokroamiseno, who was a government official at that time. His grandfather, R.M. Adipati Tjokronegoro, who also served as Regent of Ponorogo, added a family footprint in government.
As the leader of the Sarekat Islam organization, Tjokroaminoto not only brought about changes in politics, but also in education. He was a teacher for great Indonesian leaders such as Semaoen, Alimin, Muso, Soekarno, Kartosuwiryo, and even Tan Malaka. Tjokroaminoto was the first figure who refused to submit to the Dutch colonialists, inspiring the colors of the Indonesian movement after his death.
The movements built by his students reflected various ideologies, including socialist, nationalist and Islamic. However, the differences in understanding among the students led to conflicts, including the 1948 Madiun Uprising which was sparked by the Indonesian Communist Party. Political influence at that time sparked a conflict between these leaders.
Tjokroaminoto is also known for his inspirational trilogy: "The highest knowledge, the pure monotheism, the cleverest strategy." This message reflects the challenges faced by Indonesian freedom fighters in his day.
In May 1912, Tjokroaminoto founded the organization Sarekat Islam, formerly known as the Islamic Trade Union, and was elected chairman. He was buried at TMP Pekuncen, Yogyakarta, after he died at the age of 52, after attending the SI Congress in Banjarmasin.
His message to his students, especially Sukarno, was "if you want to be a great Leader, write like a journalist and speak like an orator." This message inspires future leaders to develop strong communication skills.
Oemar Said Tjokroaminoto has left a lasting legacy of movement and inspiration in the long journey towards Indonesian independence.
