The incident involving suspect Andi Wijaya (41), a resident of Pipa Reja Street, Kemuning District, Palembang, took place on July 24, 2023, near a Christian cemetery not far from his home.
"Head of Sub-Directorate 3 of Jatanras, Commissioner Agus Prihadinika, stated that the victim, Sopian, was a friend and neighbor of the suspect. The incident began when the victim was passing by on his motorcycle and was struck by Andi Wijaya using a shovel, which was being used to dig graves," he explained.
As a result of the blow, the victim fell down and was subsequently attacked again by the suspect. However, Sopian managed to dodge the attack and fled, leaving his motorcycle behind, which was then seized by the suspect.
After being on the run for approximately three (3) weeks, the suspect, who worked as a grave digger, was captured by the Operational unit 1 of Sub-Directorate 3 of the Criminal Investigation Directorate of the South Sumatra Regional Police, under the leadership of Inspector Willy Oscar.
The arrest of suspect Andi Wijaya took place on the evening of the 78th anniversary of Indonesian Independence Day, Wednesday (August 16), at around 20:00 local time at his residence. One motorcycle, which served as evidence, was also seized and taken to the police headquarters.
"Commissioner Agus Prihadinika, the Head of Sub-Directorate 3 of Jatanras, added that the suspect is charged under Article 365 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to robbery with violence (curas). The case is currently under investigation and will be further developed," he added.
