Astronomy Shines as a Popular Category in National Science Olympiad for High School Students

PersatuanindoNEWS.com - The field of astronomy has become one of the most attractive competition categories for high school students in the National Science Olympiad (OSN). Labiba Tuhfatus Safira, a student from SMA Negeri 1 Malang, East Java, believes that astronomy is very exciting and enjoyable.

"Astronomy is exciting and enjoyable. We can learn about the details of the sky and the moon. The most memorable experience for me was participating in the observation round using a telescope at night. I observed the moon together with other friends," Labiba said after completing the observation round test in the Astronomy category of the OSN at SMA Negeri 7 Bogor, West Java, on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at night.

Labiba also added that she and other OSN participants were very enthusiastic about participating in the offline OSN for high school students. "I can meet friends from all over Indonesia who are interested in astronomy. Moreover, we can exchange opinions about astronomy. All the friends here are very enthusiastic," she said.

The same sentiment was expressed by another OSN participant, Gregorian Eka Putra Wara, from SMAS Santo Yoseph Denpasar, Bali. According to him, astronomy is his way of loving science. "Since I was a child, I fell in love with astronomy because it is both exciting and enjoyable. When I was 10 years old, I learned about the phenomenon of black holes. I am happy to gain valuable experience in the OSN. The observation round was my first experience using a telescope," Gregorian explained.

Hakim L. Malasan, the judge of the Astronomy category in the 2023 OSN, stated that astronomy has become a highly anticipated competition category for students after three years of offline OSN events. "The students' interest in astronomy has been increasing year by year. The observation round is a distinctive feature of the OSN Astronomy category and is eagerly awaited by the students," he said.

Labiba and Gregorian are among the hundreds of participants in the high school level of the 2023 OSN, organized by the Indonesian Talent Development Center (BPTI), the National Achievement Center (Puspresnas), and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) in Bogor, West Java, from August 28 to September 2, 2023. The high school level of the OSN features nine competition categories: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Informatics/Computer Science, Biology, Astronomy, Economics, Earth Science, and Geography.

Public Night Event for the OSN Astronomy Category

In addition to the implementation of the OSN Astronomy category at SMA Negeri 7 Bogor, a special Public Night Event for the OSN Astronomy category was held on the same day and location to attract public interest in astronomy in the city of Bogor and among participants of other OSN categories.

The event featured telescope observations, astronomy films, bazaars, and Q&A sessions about astronomy. Interestingly, the visitors were most interested in trying out telescope observations. Participants from other OSN categories such as mathematics, earth science, physics, and others were curious to experience telescope observations. Furthermore, on that night, there was a phenomenon of Saturn and the Super Blue Moon meeting.

"Today, there is an interesting phenomenon, which is the conjunction of the planet Saturn and the moon. We can see the moon with Saturn next to it. So, the visitors were directed to observe that, and it became an enjoyable experience for hundreds of participants from other OSN categories who attended tonight," said Hakim L. Malasan.
