Abdoel Moeis, The Journey of a Writer and Hero in Achieving Indonesian Independence

Born in Sungai Puar, West Sumatra, he had strong Minangkabau roots as the son of Datuk Tumangguang Sutan Sulaiman. His bravery in opposing Dutch policies from the beginning depicted the spirit of resistance that shaped his journey.

His dedication to Sarekat Islam, a powerful socio-political organization in its time, and his membership in the Volksraad, the Dutch colonial representative council, proved his role in the fight for independence and change. The recognition as the first National Hero, bestowed by President Soekarno in 1959, demonstrated the nation's appreciation for his contributions.

After completing his education at Stovia and working as a journalist in Bandung, Abdoel Moeis joined Sarekat Islam in 1913. He even became the Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Kaoem Moeda, showcasing his leadership abilities and the dissemination of the struggle's ideas through the media.

However, his life journey was not without controversy. Accusations of involvement in the murder of a Dutch supervisor in Toli-Toli in 1919 cast a shadow over his reputation. This may have been a consequence of his militant role in fighting against Dutch oppression. His selection as the Chairman of the Perkumpulan Buruh Pegadaian and his leadership in labor strikes in Yogyakarta demonstrated his concern for the welfare of the people.

While in exile in Garut, Abdul Muis continued his struggle through writing. His famous novel "Salah Asuhan" is a tangible evidence of his involvement in responding to and depicting society at that time. After Indonesia's independence, he continued to contribute by establishing the Persatuan Perjuangan Priangan, showcasing his commitment to development and progress in West Java.

His works, including novels such as "Pertemuan Jodoh," "Surapati," and "Robert Anak Surapati," not only reflected the era but also became a valuable literary legacy of an intellectual with a spirit of change. His death in 1959 and his burial at TMP Cikutra, Bandung, marked the end of the life and struggle of a dedicated figure for the nation and homeland.
