To prevent such incidents from recurring and causing loss of life or property damage, the Water and Air Police Directorate of the Central Java Regional Police has urged ship owners, operators, managers, and captains to have two crew members on guard duty for 24 hours on a rotating basis.
"Each ship is required to provide a fire extinguisher and regularly check it. They must also adhere to standard operating procedures while conducting activities on board, especially those related to electricity or fire," said Director of Water and Air Police of the Central Java Regional Police, Commissioner Pol Hariadi, on Friday (18/8/2023).
The directorate also emphasized that repairs, especially hot work such as welding, and ship engine maintenance should not be carried out on the ship while it is berthed or docked. If such work needs to be done, it should be performed in a separate location away from other ships.
Meanwhile, the Head of Public Relations of the Central Java Regional Police, Commissioner Pol Satake Bayu Setianto, requested ship owners, shipyards, and terminal owners to pay attention to safety factors, including the safety of workers, crew members, and the surrounding community at the pier or dock. The aim is to prevent work accidents or fire disasters from recurring in the waters of Central Java.
"Pay attention to the foremost factors of security and safety in the activities and actions of the crew members, both during sailing and when the ship is berthed," he added.
