Freeport Indonesia Prints World History with the Biggest Flag on the Top of the Mountain

PersatuanindoNEWS.com - Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) made history by breaking the Guinness World Records (GWR) for the largest flag ever flown on a mountain and surpassing the previous world record for the largest flag, which measured 2,742,434 square meters (m2).

PTFI successfully unfurled a red and white flag measuring 3,431.25 m2 in the open-pit mining area of Grasberg at an elevation of 4,285 meters above sea level (masl).

This achievement is part of the celebration of Indonesia's 78th Independence Day (HUT) conducted by PTFI under the theme "Kita Satu, Melaju untuk Indonesia Maju" (We are One, Progressing for an Advanced Indonesia).

The award for this flag display was received by PTFI President Director, Tony Wenas, on Wednesday, August 16, 2023.

"The unfurling of this flag represents our spirit in celebrating Indonesia's 78th Independence Day, our unity, and our commitment to give our best for the advancement of Indonesia," said Tony Wenas, President Director of PTFI.

"It is also a reaffirmation of our dedication to the nation. Despite facing the challenges of operating at an elevation of 4,285 masl and all the associated risks, our spirit continues to burn brightly. I believe this spirit will continue to drive us to dedicate ourselves, collaborate, and make positive contributions to society and the surrounding environment," added Tony Wenas.

The unfurling of the largest flag took place from August 14, 2023, at the highest location in the Grasberg open-pit mining area, which has been operated by PTFI since 1991 and completed its mining activities in 2020.

Currently, PTFI's mining operations have transitioned to the underground mine located within the Grasberg area.

Collaboration and teamwork in overcoming various challenges played a crucial role in achieving the success of breaking this world record.

The event concluded with the "Kita Satu" music concert, featuring the legendary Indonesian band, Slank.

The concert, which also set a record with the Indonesian Museum of Records (MURI) as the highest music concert in Indonesia, was held at the Grasberg Freeport Indonesia mining area at an elevation of 4,285 masl.

Previously, in 2022, PTFI achieved a MURI record for a musical performance held at the deepest location, 1,220 meters below the surface. The performance took place in the Grasberg Block Caving (GBC) underground mine area of PTFI.
